I was true to my word. Before Lawrence left my house he made me promise, once again, not to try to repeat our lovemaking and to push him away if he did. The next few weeks were agonizing. We exchanged pleasantries in the hallway and once he had come to the nurse's office to see about a student whose parents could not be reached.
Each time I was near him I could feel the sharp pang of desire gnawing at my loins. His voice echoed in my ears and I couldn't help but recall the sound of raw passion ringing out in my bedroom. When he came to check on the student he was close enough to feel the heat of his body and smell the enticing fragrance of his skin.
I'm sure no one could have noticed the connection between us, but it burned in our eyes each time they met. I didn't feel slighted because I could read the torture in his face each time he glanced my way. He felt as frustrated and unfinished as I did.
Lawrence succumbed to the flu that was taking everyone down at school. One Monday morning he called in sick and on Friday of that week when he still hadn't come in to work, I knew he must have a serious case. No one with Dr. Higgins dedication to his school would miss almost a whole week if he wasn't really ill.
I phoned him up and asked him if I could come and take a look at him and bring him some soup or maybe pick up some medicines for his symptoms. He sounded terrible. When he instantly agreed to my offer, I was convinced that he was really sick. He wouldn't allow me to come to his house otherwise.
I made up a nice pot of chicken soup and picked up some decongestant tablets and some menthol rub for his chest. With this flu, the congestion was the killer. The CDC considered it a particularly virulent strain that was hard to manage. Several people had died across many states. I knew that Lawrence was the type of man who would never check into a hospital for 'just the flu' and wanted to reassure myself that he was going to be okay.
He opened the door when I rang the bell and I have to say that my handsome Dr. Higgins looked terrible. His face was sort of gray around the edges and his skin looked dull and lackluster. His eyes were sunken and deeply shadowed. When he let me in, he immediately went back to his bed and seemed exhausted by the effort of answering the door.
I asked him to sit up so that I could listen to his chest. He dropped the robe from his shoulders and let it pool around his hips as he meekly complied. I could hear the rattle of the mucus that had collected in his lungs and I was quite concerned that he might either have or be developing a case of pneumonia--a common complication of this flu.
